Embracing Coffee, Family, and the French Press
As a mum of two and a full-time employee, coffee is always my lifesaver. Whether it's after a rough night of sleep due to perimenopause or one of my kids, including my mother-in-law's little one, having one of those sick nights, coffee is the first thing I crave in the morning. I can feel my neurons connect after that first sip, giving me the kick I need to get through one of those long days.
I also have the pressure of being the wife of a coffee expert. He usually brings home the latest coffee brewing device and adopts it as his favourite. I've been trying to go with the flow and get into the new trends, but after going through several, I declare the French press as my favourite brewing method. This has been hard to admit because I also work in the coffee industry. I am more on the creative, admin side of the business, and my excuse for not taking the time to properly learn to prepare coffee has been that it's one of the few things my husband does for me, making me feel loved.
After giving my taste buds the chance to experiment with all those trendy methods, I find they give the coffee a very acidic flavour, and adding milk usually causes it to curdle. Yes, I like my coffee with milk, and that's another revelation that will be judged harshly by any coffee connoisseur. The easy morning ritual of making my coffee in the French press, just adding two full spoons of ground coffee and water just below the Bodum sign, brings me joy. The fact that I can enjoy a very fruity coffee and, in my case, enhance its notes with a dash of milk without spoiling its texture is just perfect.
My favourite coffee to brew in a French press is La Bomba Filter. After adding the dash of milk, I can taste its wild berries notes; they go through my palate, and the berries' flavour is so palpable and tasteful that it feels like a sweet morning treat. Allowing myself five minutes during the morning rush to enjoy every sip of this cup of luxury is one of those things that I would call pure joy.
In a world full of hustle and bustle, I guess you just have to pick your battles. I am nothing close to a coffee connoisseur, and I embrace it. I like the fact that I can fit a coffee ritual into the rush of my mornings. Finding a moment to savour something as simple as a well-brewed cup of coffee can make all the difference. For me, that moment with my French press and my favourite brew is a small but significant way to start the day right.
