How to Brew Coffee with a V60, A Step by Step Guide
The V60 pour-over method is one of the most popular ways to brew specialty coffee, allowing you to highlight the unique flavours of your beans with precision. Here’s everything you need to get started.
What You Need for V60 Brewing
Make sure you have the right tools for a perfect V60 brew. The right equipment and coffee will make all the difference.
For this method, we recommend La Bomba Filter or La Bomba Pink Bourbon. These two coffees will guarantee the best flavour and extraction, bringing out the most delicate and complex notes in your cup.
Essential Equipment
V60 dripper (portafilter)
Paper filters (unless using a metal filter)
Small scale (to weigh coffee and water)
Timer (to track extraction time)
Coffee grinder (for fresh and flavorful coffee)
Coffee beans (pre-ground if no grinder is available)
Kettle (gooseneck recommended, ideally with an adjustable thermostat)
Coffee server or cup
Grind Size Recommendation
Medium-fine (similar to beach sand) for optimal extraction.
Step-by-Step V60 Brewing Guide
Step 1 – Measure Your Coffee and Water
For two cups (200ml per cup), use 25g of coffee. Heat your water to 93°C while grinding your coffee to a medium-fine consistency.
Step 2 – Rinse the Filter
Place the paper filter in the V60 and pour hot water over it to remove any papery taste. Discard the rinse water.
Step 3 – Add Coffee Grounds
Set your V60 dripper and server on the scale, tare it to zero, and add 25g of coffee grounds.
Step 4 – Blooming Phase
Tare the scale again and start your timer. Gently pour 50g of water in a circular motion, saturating all the coffee grounds. Let it bloom for 30 seconds to release trapped gases and enhance extraction.
Step 5 – Pouring the Water
Continue pouring in slow, circular motions, adding 100g of water at a time, pausing for 10 seconds between pours. Repeat until you reach 400g of total water (1:16 ratio).
Step 6 – Serve and Enjoy
Once the water has fully drained, remove the V60 dripper, gently stir your coffee, and pour it into preheated cups.
